HEALTH & THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The next evolution of using lighting is to create places that benefit people’s health and lives.

The connection between human health and lighting has become an important focus for architectural lighting designers. Circadian rhythms, sleeping, alertness, healing, and stress reduction are being studied by current investigations and there is more and more evidence of the impact of light on our health.

Energy codes and sustainability have initially driven new lighting design as new sources of lighting such as LEDs have provided a technological revolution. At the same time advanced lighting controls have enabled people to control their level of illumination and color of lighting to a greater and greater degree.

New technologies have enabled spaces to be designed to provide lighting specifically tailored to the occupant and use. We can now have illumination levels that vary within the space, whether hourly, daily or as the use of the space changes.
